What this calculator does
Days to years comes up when a long stretch of time, an age in days, a project timeline or a countdown, needs converting to a more familiar unit. Because calendar years are not all the same length (365 days in a common year, 366 in a leap year), a days-to-years conversion needs an average figure to stay accurate over long spans.
This calculator converts days to years or years to days, both directions, using 365.25 days per year, the standard average that accounts for the leap year added roughly every four years. The equivalent in months is shown alongside.
The formula
Dividing a number of days by 365.25 gives the equivalent in years, using the long-run average calendar year length. Multiplying a number of years by 365.25 converts back to days. Using 365 or 366 instead would introduce a small but compounding error over spans of many years.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Day | A 24-hour period, the base unit this conversion works from. |

When to use it
Converting an age or duration given in days
An age, a project length or a countdown given as a raw number of days converts to years for a figure that is easier to picture and compare.
Estimating years from a large day count
A question like "how many years is 10,000 days" is answered directly, without needing to work through leap years by hand.
Planning a target date a set number of years out
A number of years converts to days first, as a step toward working out a target date or deadline.
Worked examples
Every figure in the tables below is produced by this page’s own calculator at build time, so the numbers and the tool always agree. Select any row to load that scenario.

Questions
How many years is 10000 days?
About 27.379 years, from 10,000 ÷ 365.25.
How many years is 3000 days?
About 8.214 years, from 3,000 ÷ 365.25.
How many years is 1000 days?
About 2.738 years, from 1,000 ÷ 365.25.
Why 365.25 days per year rather than 365?
A calendar year is 365 days, except in a leap year, when it is 366. Averaged over four years, that comes to 365.25 days per year, which keeps a days-to-years conversion accurate over long spans rather than drifting off by roughly a day every four years.
