The formula

To go from a percentage to ppm, multiply by 10,000. To go from ppm back to a percentage, divide by 10,000. Both directions come from the same fact: a percent is one part in a hundred, and a ppm is one part in a million, and a million is 10,000 times a hundred.

When to use it

How do I calculate ppm from a percentage?

Multiply the percentage by 10,000. For example, 0.5% is 0.5 × 10,000 = 5,000 ppm. This works for any percentage because the two scales are a fixed ratio apart.

Is 1% always exactly 10,000 ppm?

Yes. Percent and ppm are both ways of expressing a proportion of a whole, one per hundred and one per million, so the 10,000 conversion factor between them never changes.

Does this work for converting a chemical concentration in ppm to mg/L?
