What this calculator does
A dozen is a fixed counting convention: 12 items, no more and no less. It is one of the oldest units still in everyday use, from a dozen eggs to a dozen roses, and it survives alongside the metric system purely because the number 12 divides evenly into halves, thirds and quarters in a way that 10 does not.
This calculator answers how much is a dozen in either direction: how many individual items a given number of dozens comes to, or how many dozens (and any leftover items) a given item count works out to. The factor is always exactly 12, so the arithmetic never changes and there is nothing to look up.
The formula
Converting dozens to items multiplies the number of dozens by 12. Converting items to dozens divides the item count by 12, and the leftover figure below shows how many whole dozens that is plus any items left over that do not make up a full dozen.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Dozen | A count of exactly 12 items. |
| Half-dozen | Six items, half of a dozen, a common quantity for eggs or baked goods. |
| Gross | A related older unit equal to 12 dozen, or 144 items, occasionally seen on wholesale packaging. |
The inputs explained
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Value | The number of dozens or individual items you are converting, depending on the direction chosen below. |
| Convert | Choose whether you are converting dozens into items, or items into dozens. |
When to use it
Shopping lists and recipes
Recipes and shopping lists often specify a dozen or half-dozen of an ingredient, such as eggs; converting straight to an item count avoids counting them out by hand.
Working out how many is a dozen for bulk buying
Wholesale and market pricing is sometimes quoted per dozen rather than per item, so converting a target item count into dozens shows how many dozen to actually order.
Checking a delivery or order count
If a supplier lists a quantity in dozens, converting it to individual items confirms exactly how many should be in the box before counting each one.
Worked examples
Every figure in the tables below is produced by this page’s own calculator at build time, so the numbers and the tool always agree. Select any row to load that scenario.

Common dozen quantities and the individual item count each one represents.
How many dozens in a given number of items?
Common item counts and how many whole dozens (plus leftover items) they come to.
| Items | Dozens | As whole dozens + leftover |

| 12 | 1.000 | 1 dozen + 0 items |
| 20 | 1.667 | 1 dozen + 8 items |

Questions
How many is a dozen?
A dozen is always 12. It is a fixed counting convention, not an approximation, so a dozen eggs, a dozen roses and a dozen doughnuts are all exactly 12 items.
How many in a half-dozen?
Six items, exactly half of 12. A baker’s dozen is a different, informal term for 13 items, one more than a standard dozen, traditionally added as a small bonus.
Why is 12 used instead of a round number like 10?
Twelve divides evenly by 2, 3, 4 and 6, which made it a practical counting unit for splitting goods into equal shares long before decimal systems became standard. Ten only divides evenly by 2 and 5.
What is a gross?
A gross is 12 dozen, or 144 items. It is far less common today but still turns up in wholesale packaging and older stock-count records.
