What this calculator does
A day holds 24 hours, and each of those holds 60 minutes, so a day comes to 1,440 minutes: a fixed figure that does not depend on the time of year or which day it is. This calculator confirms that number and extends it to any number of days, for whenever the day-to-minutes conversion needs to cover more than just one day.
The same multiplication also answers related questions, such as how many minutes are in a week, or how many seconds are in a day, since all three units, days, minutes and seconds, sit in a fixed ratio to each other.
The formula
Minutes are calculated as days multiplied by 24 hours, multiplied by 60 minutes per hour. Hours are days multiplied by 24. Seconds are minutes multiplied by 60.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Day | A 24-hour period, the base unit this calculator scales from. |
| Minute | One sixtieth of an hour, or one 1,440th of a day. |
| Second | One sixtieth of a minute, or one 86,400th of a day. |
The inputs explained
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Number of days | The number of days to convert. Fractions are allowed, such as 0.5 for half a day, or 1.5 for a day and a half. |
When to use it
Answering "how many minutes in a day" directly
The figure is always 1,440 for a single day, shown as the default result before entering anything else.
Scaling up to a week, a fortnight or a month
Entering 7, 14 or 30 for the number of days converts a longer stretch straight into its minute and hour totals.
Working with a fraction of a day
A half-day shift or a quarter-day event converts cleanly by entering 0.5 or 0.25 days, rather than working the fraction out by hand first.

Questions
How many minutes are in a day?
1,440 minutes: 24 hours multiplied by 60 minutes per hour.
How many minutes are in a week?
10,080 minutes, which is 1,440 minutes multiplied by 7 days.
How many seconds are in a day?

Does this figure change for a leap year or a daylight saving change?
A leap year adds a whole extra day to the year, not extra minutes to any individual day. A daylight saving clock change genuinely does make one specific day either 23 or 25 hours long; this calculator assumes an ordinary, unaffected 24-hour day.
For a full day-and-month breakdown including leap years, see the days in a year or month calculator. For the gap between two specific clock times, use the hours calculator.
