Fahrenheit to Celsius Calculator calculator

Converts Fahrenheit to Celsius or Celsius to Fahrenheit, both directions, including common oven temperatures.

Published 21 August 2026

What this calculator does

Fahrenheit to Celsius is one of the most-searched conversions online, since recipes, weather reports and oven dials switch between the two scales depending on the country. The two scales share a fixed relationship: 0°C sits at 32°F, and each Celsius degree spans 1.8 Fahrenheit degrees.

This calculator converts Fahrenheit to Celsius or Celsius to Fahrenheit, both directions, with the equivalent in Kelvin shown alongside. It defaults to 350°F, one of the most common oven temperatures in recipes written in Fahrenheit.

The formula

FormulaCelsius = (Fahrenheit − 32) × 5/9 · Fahrenheit = Celsius × 9/5 + 32

To convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, subtract 32 then multiply by 5/9. To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply by 9/5 then add 32. The 32-degree offset accounts for the different zero points of the two scales (0°C is the freezing point of water, but 32°F is), and the 5/9 or 9/5 factor accounts for the different degree sizes.

TermMeaning
Celsius (°C)The metric temperature scale, where water freezes at 0°C and boils at 100°C.
Fahrenheit (°F)The scale still used for everyday temperatures and oven dials in the US, where water freezes at 32°F and boils at 212°F.
Kelvin (K)The scientific absolute temperature scale, equal to Celsius plus 273.15, with 0 K as absolute zero.

When to use it

Converting a recipe's oven temperature

A recipe written for a Fahrenheit oven, such as "bake at 350°F", converts to Celsius for an oven dial marked only in Celsius, or the other way around.

Reading a weather forecast from another country

A temperature forecast given in Fahrenheit converts to Celsius for a more familiar sense of how hot or cold a day will be, and vice versa.

Checking a body or fever temperature reading

A temperature from a thermometer that displays in one scale converts to the other to compare against a familiar reference, such as a normal body temperature of 37°C or 98.6°F.

Questions

What is 350°F in Celsius?

176.7°C, from (350 − 32) × 5/9. Many recipes and oven dials round this to 175°C or 180°C.

How do I convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?

Subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit value, then multiply the result by 5/9. For example, 100°F: (100 − 32) × 5/9 = 37.8°C.

What temperature is the same in both Celsius and Fahrenheit?

-40 degrees. At -40°C the Fahrenheit reading is also -40°F, the one point where the two scales cross.

Is Kelvin the same size as Celsius?

Yes. A Kelvin and a Celsius degree are exactly the same size; Kelvin just starts counting from absolute zero (-273.15°C) instead of the freezing point of water. So converting Celsius to Kelvin is just adding 273.15.
