What this calculator does
How many weeks are in a month sounds like it should have one answer, but it depends on two things: how many days that month has, and which day of the week it starts on. This calculator takes any date, works out which month it falls in, and shows how many calendar weeks that month spans, alongside a plain decimal figure for anyone who just wants weeks in a month as a single number.
A month with 31 days that starts on a Saturday spans six calendar rows on a wall planner, while a 28-day month starting on a Monday spans exactly four. Neither of those is wrong, they are just different answers to how many weeks in a month depending on the specific month in question, which is why this calculator works it out from the real calendar rather than a fixed assumption.
The formula
The month is laid out on a calendar grid, Monday to Sunday. The number of full 7-day rows that fall entirely inside the month is counted, along with any partial weeks at the start or end where the month begins or ends midweek. The two together give the total number of calendar weeks the month spans.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Weeks the month spans | The number of Monday-to-Sunday calendar rows the month occupies, including partial ones at either end. |
| Full 7-day weeks | Calendar weeks that fall entirely inside the month, with no days spilling into the month before or after. |
| Partial weeks | A week at the start or end of the month that includes days from the neighbouring month too. |

When to use it
Laying out a roster or planner by week
A weekly roster or planner needs to know how many week rows a given month actually needs, which changes from month to month depending on the starting weekday.
Comparing how many weeks are in a month across different months
Payroll or billing cycles that run by calendar week sometimes need to know whether a particular month covers four, five or six week rows, which this calculator reads off directly rather than assuming a flat four weeks.
Checking the plain decimal answer to weeks in a month
For a rougher estimate, the decimal figure, days in the month divided by 7, gives a single number close to 4.3, without the calendar-grid detail.

Questions
How many weeks are in a month, on average?
Most months work out to a little over 4 weeks as a decimal figure, since the average month is about 30.4 days long and 30.4 divided by 7 is roughly 4.3. The exact calendar-row figure this calculator gives is usually 4, 5 or 6, depending on the starting weekday.
How many weeks in a month with 31 days?
It depends on the starting weekday: a 31-day month spans five calendar rows if it starts on a Monday through Wednesday, and six if it starts later in the week, since the extra days push a small partial week into a sixth row.
Why do some months show six weeks and others only four?
A month spans an extra calendar row whenever its first or last day falls in the middle of a week rather than lining up with a Monday or Sunday; longer months and months starting later in the week are more likely to need that extra row.
Is this different from the weeks in a month calculator I might have seen elsewhere?
Many quick answers to how many weeks in a month simply divide the day count by 7 and round. This calculator instead lays the month out on an actual Monday-to-Sunday calendar grid, which is what a wall planner or roster genuinely needs.
For the day count and leap year status behind any month, see the days in a year or month calculator. To count weeks between two specific dates instead of within one month, use the weeks between two dates calculator.
