What this calculator does
Jeans sizing is not one global standard the way a metre or a kilogram is. A US size 32 means something specific because denim brands broadly agree on how a waist measurement maps to a number, but the moment you cross into UK or EU sizing the labels change even though the garment does not. This jeans size chart converts between them using the sizing conventions most denim brands publish.
Men's jeans sizing is the more straightforward half: US and UK sizes are usually identical, both quoting waist size in inches, so the conversion work is really about finding the matching EU number and cm measurement. Women's jeans sizing is messier, because the US uses a numeric scale (00, 0, 2, 4…) that does not correspond directly to a waist measurement in the way a men's size does, and UK and EU sizes run on their own separate numbering again.
The formula
Enter a US jeans size and choose men's or women's fit. The calculator looks that size up against a standard published jeans size conversion table and returns the matching UK size, EU size and an approximate waist measurement. If the exact number entered is not a standard jeans size, it snaps to the nearest one that is, since jeans are only cut in specific sizes to begin with.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| US/UK size | For men's jeans, the waist measurement in inches, which US and UK sizing both use directly. |
| EU size | The continental European numbering used on jeans sold in most of mainland Europe, which does not match the inch waist number. |
| Letter size | A rough S/M/L equivalent, useful when comparing against a brand that only sells jeans by letter size. |
The inputs explained
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| US jeans size | The jeans size as printed on the label or waistband, in US sizing. |
| Fit | Men's and women's jeans use different sizing scales, so this changes which conversion table is used. |
When to use it
Buying jeans from a UK or European retailer
A size that fits perfectly from a US brand will not necessarily be labelled the same number on a UK or EU site, even from the same manufacturer, because the sizing scale printed on the tag differs by market.
Checking a hand-me-down or thrifted pair
Older or imported jeans sometimes carry only a UK or EU size on the tag. Converting it back to the more familiar US number makes it easier to judge the fit before trying them on.
Comparing sizes across brands
Denim sizing varies enough between brands that a US 32 in one label can fit like a 31 or 33 in another. The standard conversion table at least removes the UK/EU labelling as a separate source of confusion.

Questions
Is a US 32 the same as a UK 32 in jeans?
For men's jeans, yes, US and UK sizes both quote the waist in inches and are normally identical. For women's jeans the US and UK scales are different numbering systems entirely, so a US 8 is not a UK 8.
Why do jeans in the same size fit differently between brands?
Published size charts are a general guide, not a guarantee. Cut, stretch content and how a brand grades its pattern between sizes all affect fit, so the same labelled size can sit differently from one brand to the next.
What does the letter size (S, M, L) roughly correspond to?
It is an approximate equivalent based on the same waist measurement, useful mainly for comparing against brands that skip numeric jeans sizing altogether. Treat it as a rough guide rather than an exact match.
My size is not a standard jeans size, what happens?
The calculator uses the nearest standard size instead, since jeans are only manufactured in specific waist sizes. The result notes when this snapping has happened.
For converting other clothing measurements, see the shoe size converter. To check a waist measurement against cm or inches directly, the length conversion calculator can help.
