Sit too close to a large screen and individual pixels or compression artefacts become distracting; sit too far from a small one and detail is wasted and the picture feels underwhelming. There is no single official ratio, since it depends on personal preference, the content being watched and the screen's resolution: higher-resolution 4K and 8K panels tolerate closer viewing than older HD ones before individual pixels become visible. A commonly quoted middle-ground figure is a distance of about 1.5 times the screen's diagonal size, which is the default here, but the ratio is fully editable so it can be adjusted to taste or resolution.
The formula
Recommended screen size is viewing distance divided by the chosen ratio; recommended viewing distance is screen size multiplied by the same ratio. A smaller ratio favours a larger, more immersive screen at a given distance; a larger ratio is more conservative.

What ratio should I actually use?
There is no universally correct figure. A commonly quoted middle ground is around 1.5 times the diagonal size for general viewing, tightening towards 1.0 to 1.2 for a close, immersive setup with sharp 4K or 8K content, and loosening towards 2.0 or more for older or lower-resolution material where sitting closer reveals more visible pixel structure.

Does higher resolution really let you sit closer?
Yes, within reason. A higher pixel count packs more detail into the same diagonal size, so individual pixels and compression artefacts become visible only at a shorter distance than they would on a lower-resolution screen of the same size, which is why 4K and 8K guidelines allow a smaller ratio than older HD ones.
Is bigger always better if the room allows it?
Not necessarily. Beyond a certain point for a given viewing distance, a larger screen mostly adds to how much head or eye movement is needed to take in the whole picture, rather than adding genuine extra detail, which is why the ratio guideline exists in the first place.
