Half Birthday Calculator calculator

The date exactly six months after (or before) a birth date, and how many days until it next falls.

Published 21 August 2026

What this calculator does

A half birthday is exactly six months after a person's actual birthday, a date that falls on the same calendar day every year without needing any calculation more complicated than adding or subtracting six months. It gets marked mostly for children, whose birthday might land in the depths of a school holiday or a busy season, giving families a second, lower-key date to celebrate around.

This half birthday calculator works out that date from a date of birth, tells you how many days away the next one is, and shows what age, expressed as a whole number and a half, it marks. Someone whose birthday just passed reaches their half birthday, and the next full one, exactly six and twelve months later respectively.

The formula

FormulaHalf birthday = birth month + 6 months, same day of month, repeating every calendar year

The half birthday date is the birth month shifted forward six months, on the same day of the month, and it repeats on that calendar date every year. This calculator finds the next occurrence of that date on or after the reference date supplied, which is today by default.

TermMeaning
Half birthdayThe date exactly six calendar months after (or, equivalently, before) a birth date.
Reference dateThe date the calculation is measured from, defaulting to today.
Age at half birthdayThe whole number of years since birth reached at the most recent birthday, plus a half, since the half birthday sits midway to the next one.

The inputs explained

FieldWhat to enter
Date of birthThe date of birth to calculate the half birthday from.
Calculate as ofThe date to measure "next half birthday" from. Leave as today unless checking a past or future date.

When to use it

Marking a child's half birthday

Families with a birthday that falls near a major holiday or the summer break sometimes use the half birthday as an alternative date for a small celebration, spaced evenly across the year from the main one.

Planning an event exactly mid-cycle

A half birthday is a convenient, easily remembered reference point for anything meant to happen at the midpoint between two annual dates, without needing to count months by hand.

Working out what age someone will be on a specific mid-year date

Entering a future reference date shows what half birthday, and what age and a half, falls on or after that date.

Worked examples

Every figure in the tables below is produced by this page’s own calculator at build time, so the numbers and the tool always agree. Select any row to load that scenario.

How the half birthday date follows from different birth months

A range of birth dates across the calendar, showing where each one's half birthday falls.

The half birthday always falls exactly six calendar months from the birth date, so a January birthday has a July half birthday, a June birthday has a December one, and so on, regardless of which year the calculation is run in.

Questions

Is a half birthday exactly 182 or 183 days from the birthday?

Not quite, and it does not need to be. It is defined as the same day of the month six calendar months later, which lands anywhere from about 181 to 184 days later depending on which months are involved, rather than a fixed day count.

What happens if someone is born on the 29th, 30th or 31st of a month?

If the month six calendar months later is shorter, the date is carried forward to the first day of the following month, the same way calendar software normally handles an overflowing day of the month.

Is a half birthday celebrated the same way as a birthday?

There is no fixed tradition. Some families mark it with a small treat or a half-sized cake as a light-hearted nod to the date; most people do not celebrate it at all. It is mainly a fun, easily calculated milestone rather than a formal occasion.

Does the half birthday calculation account for leap years?

Yes. The date is worked out using the actual calendar for the year in question, so a half birthday that happens to fall near the end of February in a leap year is calculated correctly for that year.
