What this calculator does
Christmas in Australia falls on the same calendar date as everywhere else, 25 December, but it lands in the middle of the southern hemisphere summer rather than winter. That means a very different picture around it: beach barbecues instead of snow, Boxing Day cricket and the Boxing Day Test, and the Sydney to Hobart yacht race starting the day after.
This calculator works out how many days till Christmas from whatever date you enter, and it stays accurate every year because it is never tied to one specific Christmas. Enter today’s date (already filled in) and it counts forward to the next 25 December, rolling over to the following year automatically once Christmas has passed.
The formula
Christmas Day is always 25 December. The calculator compares that date in the current year against your starting date: if 25 December this year is still ahead, that is the target; if it has already gone, the target rolls forward to 25 December next year. The gap between the two dates, in days, is the headline figure.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Days until Christmas | Whole days remaining from the starting date to the next 25 December. |
| Reference state/territory | Which Australian time zone the count is anchored to, since Christmas Day itself starts a little earlier in the eastern states than in Western Australia. |
The inputs explained
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Starting date | The date to count forward from. Defaults to today. |
| Reference state/territory | Only affects which local midnight the countdown is anchored to; the day count itself is the same nationwide. |
When to use it
Planning an Australian Christmas
Christmas shopping, travel bookings and family gatherings in Australia are planned around the summer school holidays, which start well before 25 December, so a live day count helps pace out the lead-up.
Counting down to Boxing Day events
The Boxing Day Test and the start of the Sydney to Hobart both follow the same 25 December anchor, so this same countdown roughly tracks how long until those as well.
Comparing with a Northern Hemisphere Christmas
The date and the day count are identical worldwide; what differs is the season around it, which is the main reason an Australia-specific page is useful even though the underlying maths is the same everywhere.
Worked examples
Every figure in the tables below is produced by this page’s own calculator at build time, so the numbers and the tool always agree. Select any row to load that scenario.

Questions
Why doesn’t this calculator just say the exact number for this year?
A fixed number would be wrong the moment a day passes, and completely wrong the following year. Working it out live from today’s date, the same way this calculator does, is the only way the answer stays correct without needing to be updated every year.
Is Christmas Day in Australia on a different date to the rest of the world?
No, it is 25 December everywhere. What is different in Australia is the season: Christmas falls in summer, during the school holidays, rather than in winter.
Does the time zone selector change the day count?
Only very slightly, at the boundary: Western Australia is a couple of hours behind the eastern states, so Christmas Day technically starts a little later there. For everyday planning purposes the day count is the same across the country.
How is this different from a general days-until-Christmas calculator?
The underlying date maths is the same. This page is framed specifically around the Australian summer Christmas context, including nearby events like the Boxing Day Test, rather than the more general version.
For the general version of this countdown without the Australian framing, see the days until Christmas calculator. To count down to any other date, use the days until calculator.
