Birth Year Calculator calculator

Works out the possible birth year for someone at a given current age, as a range of two years.

Published 21 August 2026

What this calculator does

If someone tells you their age, you cannot pin down their exact birth year without also knowing their birthday, because a birthday falls on one specific day of the year. This birth year calculator takes any current age and works out the range of one or two calendar years that someone of that age could have been born in, worked out from today's actual date.

This comes up constantly with phrasing like "if I am 18, what year was I born" or "what year was I born if I am 16". The honest answer is never a single year unless you also know the month and day of birth: someone who is 18 today was born in either this year minus 18 or this year minus 19, depending on whether their birthday has already happened this year.

The formula

FormulaIf the birthday has already happened this year: birth year = current year − age. If it has not: birth year = current year − age − 1. Since the birthday date is unknown, both are shown as the possible range

Subtract the age from the current year to get the later possible birth year, which applies if the birthday has already passed this year. Subtract one more year for the earlier possible birth year, which applies if the birthday has not happened yet. Both are shown together as the honest range, since the calculator has no way of knowing the exact birth date.

TermMeaning
Later possible birth yearCurrent year minus age; correct if the birthday has already occurred this year.
Earlier possible birth yearCurrent year minus age minus one; correct if the birthday has not yet occurred this year.
Reference dateThe date the age is being measured as of, normally today.

The inputs explained

FieldWhat to enter
Current age (years)The current age in whole years, for example 18.
As of this dateThe date to calculate as of. Leave as today unless working out an age at some other point in time.

When to use it

Working out an approximate birth year from a stated age

Someone mentions their age in conversation or on a form, and you want to convert that into an approximate birth year without asking for their exact date of birth.

Checking eligibility rules based on birth year

Some eligibility criteria (competitions, school year groups, historical records) are written in terms of birth year rather than age, so converting a stated age into the matching birth year range shows which cohorts it could fall into.

Sanity-checking an age against a claimed birth year

If someone gives both an age and a birth year, this shows whether the two are consistent with each other as of today, or off by a year in a way that suggests one of them is wrong.

Worked examples

Every figure in the tables below is produced by this page’s own calculator at build time, so the numbers and the tool always agree. Select any row to load that scenario.

Possible birth years for a range of current ages

Each age maps to two possible birth years, one year apart, because the age alone does not say whether this year's birthday has already passed.

Questions

If I am 18, what year was I born?

Either this year minus 18 or this year minus 19, depending on whether your birthday has already happened this year. Without the exact birth date, both are equally valid possibilities.

Why can't the calculator give one exact year?

Age is a whole number of completed years, but a birthday can fall on any of the 365 days in a year. Two people born a year apart can currently report the same age for most of the year, which is exactly why the answer is a range.

How is this different from the how old am I calculator?

The how old am I calculator goes from an exact date of birth to an exact current age. This tool runs the other direction, from an age back to the possible birth years, which is inherently less precise.

Does this work for any age, not just 18?

Yes, the age entered is a free input; 18 is just a common example. Enter any current age to see its possible birth year range.

To go the other direction, from an exact date of birth to an exact current age, use the how old am I calculator. For counting the days to or from any specific date, see the days until a date calculator.
