Age From Birth Year Calculator calculator

Current age from a birth year alone, as a range of two possible ages.

Published 21 August 2026

What this calculator does

Given only a birth year, such as 1989, working out someone's current age cannot produce a single exact number, because a birthday falls on one specific day and it is unknown whether that day has already passed this year. This calculator takes a birth year and returns both possible ages: the one if the birthday has already happened this year, and the one if it has not.

This is the mirror image of working from a known current age back to a possible birth year. Someone born in 1989 asking their 1989 age now will get two possible answers for exactly the same reason: without the month and day of birth, only a range can be given, not a single figure.

The formula

FormulaIf the birthday has already happened this year: age = current year − birth year. If it has not: age = current year − birth year − 1. Since the exact birth date is unknown, both are shown as the possible range

If the birthday has already happened this year, age = current year − birth year. If it has not yet happened, age = current year − birth year − 1. Both are shown because the exact birth date is not supplied.

TermMeaning
Birth yearThe calendar year someone was born in, without a specific month or day.
Possible age rangeThe two ages that are consistent with a birth year alone: one assumes the birthday has passed this year, the other assumes it has not.

The inputs explained

FieldWhat to enter
Birth yearThe birth year, with no month or day required.
As of this dateThe date to calculate the age as of. Defaults to today.

When to use it

Estimating age from a birth year alone

Records, forms or casual conversation sometimes only give a birth year rather than a full date of birth, in which case the two-age range is the most precise answer that can honestly be given.

Historical or genealogical estimates

Older records frequently list only a birth year, and working out an approximate age at a given date is a common step in family history research.

Checking eligibility windows

Some age-based eligibility rules only need to know which of two possible ages applies, which this range makes explicit rather than assuming the more convenient one.

Worked examples

Every figure in the tables below is produced by this page’s own calculator at build time, so the numbers and the tool always agree. Select any row to load that scenario.

What age range does a given birth year give today?

A range of birth years, worked out as of today's date.

Age as of today
Birth yearPossible current age
197055 or 56 years
198045 or 46 years
198936 or 37 years
199530 or 31 years
200025 or 26 years
201015 or 16 years
Someone born in 1989 is either 36 or 37 as of today, depending on whether their birthday has occurred yet this year.

How does the reference date change the age range for a fixed birth year?

A fixed 1989 birth year, checked against a range of reference dates.

Born in 1989
As of datePossible current age
2026-01-0136 or 37 years
2026-06-1536 or 37 years
2026-12-3136 or 37 years
The two-age range stays the same width across the year; only which of the two is more likely shifts as the reference date moves through the calendar.

Questions

Why does this give two ages instead of one?

A birth year alone does not say whether the birthday has already happened this year. Someone could have had their birthday last week or not for another eleven months, and those two cases produce ages one year apart, so both are shown.

What is someone born in 1989's age now?

As of 2026, either 36 or 37, depending on whether their birthday has occurred yet this year.

How is this different from the birth year calculator?

The birth year calculator starts from a known current age and works out the possible birth years. This calculator runs the same logic in reverse: starting from a known birth year to work out the possible current ages.

What if I know the exact date of birth, not just the year?

The how old am I calculator takes a full date of birth and gives an exact age in years, months and days, with no range needed.

For the reverse calculation, starting from a known age to find possible birth years, see the birth year calculator. For an exact age from a full date of birth, use the how old am I calculator.
