What this calculator does
How many days until New Year is a moving target: unlike a fixed date such as Christmas, "New Year" always means the next 1 January, whichever year that turns out to be. This calculator takes any starting date, works out which 1 January comes next, and counts the days, weeks and hours between the two.
The target year is never fixed in the calculation itself. It is always one year after whichever year the starting date falls in, so the same calculator keeps working correctly every year without needing an update, and answers the same question for a past or future starting date as well as for today.
The formula
The calculator takes the year of the starting date and adds one to find the next 1 January, then counts the whole days between the starting date and that target date. If the starting date is itself 1 January, the result is zero, since that date already is New Year's Day.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Target date | The 1 January that follows the starting date, always in the year after the starting date's own year. |
| New Year's Day | The first day of the calendar year, 1 January, distinct from New Year's Eve, the night before it. |
The inputs explained
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Starting date | The date to count forward from. Defaults to today. |
When to use it
Counting down to New Year's Eve celebrations
A New Year countdown is one of the most common seasonal date questions, and since the target date changes every year, working it out from today rather than a remembered date avoids using last year's figure by mistake.
Setting a deadline for "before the new year"
Some sales, subscriptions and administrative deadlines are set to run out at the end of the calendar year, and knowing the exact day count to 1 January helps plan around that cutoff.
Working out the days remaining from any point in the year
The same count from any starting date, not only today, shows how many days were left at a particular point, which is useful for reviewing how much of the year remained at that time.

Every figure in the tables below is produced by this page’s own calculator at build time, so the numbers and the tool always agree. Select any row to load that scenario.
How many days until New Year from different points in the year?

Questions
Does this calculator use a fixed year?
No. The target date is always 1 January of the year after whichever year is entered as the starting date, worked out fresh from that date each time, so the calculator gives the correct count for today, for a past date or for a future date without needing any change.
Is this the same as the days until Christmas calculator?
No, they count to different target dates. The days until Christmas calculator counts to 25 December, while this calculator counts to 1 January, the two being roughly a week apart.
What does it show if I enter 1 January itself?
Zero days, with a note that the date entered already is New Year's Day, rather than counting forward a full year to the next one.
Can I check how many days were left on a past date?
Yes, enter that date as the starting date and the calculator counts forward to the 1 January that followed it, showing how many days remained in that year from that point.
For a countdown to Christmas Day itself, see the days until Christmas calculator. For the day count and leap year status of a whole year, use the days in a year or month calculator.
