What this calculator does
A steps to calories calculator turns a pedometer or phone step count into an estimated energy cost. It first converts steps into distance using an average stride length, then estimates calories from that distance and body weight, using a walking-pace energy cost figure.
The result is an estimate, not a measurement. Actual energy cost varies with walking speed, terrain, fitness and how the step count itself was measured, so treat the figure as a reasonable ballpark rather than an exact reading.
The formula
Distance is the step count multiplied by the average stride length. Calories are estimated as distance in kilometres multiplied by body weight in kilograms multiplied by 0.66, a figure derived from the standard MET value for walking at a moderate pace (MET about 3.5) applied over that distance.

Comparing step counts against a calorie target
Where a rough daily calorie burn from walking is useful context, converting steps to an estimated figure gives a starting point, alongside other activity.
Adjusting for a personal stride length
Someone notably taller or shorter than average covers more or less distance per step, so entering an actual measured stride gives a more accurate distance and calorie estimate than the default.

Why does the calculator ask for stride length?
Steps are converted to distance before calories are estimated, and stride length is what links the two. A longer stride covers more distance per step, so the same step count burns more energy.
Is this the same as the steps to km calculator?
The steps to km calculator only converts steps into a distance. This calculator uses that same distance conversion as one step, then goes further to estimate calories burned, using body weight as well.
Does this account for running instead of walking?
No, the 0.66 kcal per kg per km figure is based on a moderate walking pace. Running burns more per kilometre than walking, so this estimate is likely to undercount for a jogged or run step count.
