What this calculator does

Net run rate, or NRR, is the figure cricket tournaments use to separate teams that finish level on points: it is the team’s run rate while batting minus its run rate while bowling, calculated as NRR = (runs scored ÷ overs faced) − (runs conceded ÷ overs bowled). A positive NRR means a team has, on average, scored faster than it has conceded; a negative one means the opposite.

This nrr calculator takes the runs and overs from both innings of a match and works out the net run rate using that standard method, including the overs-notation quirk (48.4 overs means 48 overs and 4 balls, not 48.4 decimal overs) and the rule that a team all out before using its full quota of overs is credited with having faced or bowled the full innings length, not just the overs actually completed.

The formula

FormulaNRR = (runs scored ÷ overs faced) − (runs conceded ÷ overs bowled)

Overs faced and overs bowled are each converted from the X.Y cricket notation, where Y is a ball count from 0 to 5, into a decimal number of overs (X + Y ÷ 6). Runs scored divided by the decimal overs faced gives the batting run rate; runs conceded divided by the decimal overs bowled gives the bowling run rate. Net run rate is the batting rate minus the bowling rate.

When to use it

Ranking teams level on points in a group stage

When two or more teams finish a tournament stage with the same number of points, net run rate is the standard tiebreaker, so working it out for each completed match tracks a team’s standing through the tournament.

Working out the effect of a bowled-out innings

A team that is bowled out cheaply still counts as having used its full quota of overs for run rate purposes, not just the overs it actually faced, which materially changes the calculation compared with treating the overs faced at face value.

Converting cricket overs notation correctly

Reading 48.4 overs as 48.4 decimal overs rather than 48 and 4 balls (48.667 decimal overs) is a common source of run rate errors; entering the overs as printed in the scorecard avoids that mistake.

How NRR changes with the batting all-out rule

Counting the innings at the 35.2 overs actually faced gives a net run rate of +0.694, but correctly treating an all-out innings as having used the full 50-over quota instead gives −0.800, a large swing that shows why the all-out rule matters for an accurate figure.

With overs and the conceded total unchanged, net run rate moves in a straight line with the batting total: scoring 220 for the match gives an NRR of exactly 0.000, and each further 20 runs scored over the same 50 overs lifts NRR by another 0.400.

What is the NRR formula?

NRR = (runs scored ÷ overs faced) − (runs conceded ÷ overs bowled), using decimal overs rather than the raw X.Y scorecard notation.

How do I convert overs like 48.4 into decimal overs?

The number after the point in cricket’s overs notation is a ball count, from 0 to 5, not tenths of an over. So 48.4 overs is 48 overs plus 4 balls, which equals 48 + 4÷6 ≈ 48.667 decimal overs. This calculator does that conversion for you.

What happens to NRR if a team is bowled out?

If a team loses all ten wickets before using its full quota of overs, it is credited with having faced (or, for the bowling side, bowled) the full innings length for run rate purposes, not just the overs it actually completed. This generally lowers a bowled-out team’s NRR compared with using the overs actually faced.

Can NRR be negative?

Yes. A negative NRR simply means a team has, across its games, conceded runs faster than it has scored them, and it ranks below a team with a higher (or positive) NRR when teams are level on points.
