What this calculator does
People searching for how long it takes to tan are usually really asking how long their skin can be in the sun before it burns, since a tan is skin's damage response to ultraviolet exposure rather than a separate, safer process. This calculator answers that more useful question directly: given a UV index and a Fitzpatrick skin type, it works out the approximate time to reach the minimal erythemal dose, the exposure level at which skin starts to redden, using the published relationship between UV index and erythemal UV irradiance.
There is no skin type or UV index at which tanning is free of damage. The tan itself is melanin being produced in response to DNA-damaging UV radiation, and both burning and tanning contribute to the same long-run skin cancer and premature ageing risk. The time shown here is a guide to when unprotected skin is at meaningful risk, not a target to sit in the sun until, and shade, sunscreen and covering up are the more useful actions whatever the number says.
The formula
The UV index is defined so that 1 UV index unit corresponds to an erythemally-weighted irradiance of 0.025 watts per square metre. Dividing the minimal erythemal dose (MED) for a given Fitzpatrick skin type, in joules per square metre, by that irradiance gives the number of seconds of unprotected exposure needed to reach it. Applying a sunscreen SPF stretches that time by roughly the SPF factor, the standard (if approximate) way SPF is explained publicly, and assumes the sunscreen is applied thickly and correctly and has not worn off or washed off.

Tanning and burning are the same underlying process, skin producing melanin and sustaining UV damage in response to exposure, so the honest answer is the same as the time to sunburn shown above for your skin type and UV index. There is no separate, damage-free tanning window.
What is a Fitzpatrick skin type?
A published six-category dermatological scale (I to VI) describing how skin typically responds to sun exposure, from very fair skin that always burns and never tans (Type I) to deeply pigmented skin that rarely burns (Type VI). It is a widely used clinical shorthand, not a precise measurement.
Does sunscreen make tanning or burning impossible?
No. It extends the time to reach the same UV dose by roughly its SPF factor when applied correctly and reapplied as directed, but it does not block UV exposure entirely, and sweating, swimming or time reduce its effectiveness.
Is there a UV index at which sun exposure is completely safe?
