What this calculator does

The area of a rectangle is the amount of flat space it covers, found by multiplying its length by its width. It is one of the first area formulas taught precisely because it needs nothing more than two straight measurements and a single multiplication.

This calculator leads with that area as the headline figure, taking a length and a width and returning the area of rectangle first, with the perimeter and diagonal given underneath for whichever secondary measurement the job also needs.

Rectangle area formula gives a straight-line increase in area as width grows at a fixed length, while the diagonal grows more slowly still, since it depends on the square root of the sum of the two sides squared.

How do you find the area of a rectangle?

Multiply length by width. Both measurements need to be in the same unit, and the result comes out in that unit squared: metres times metres gives square metres.

What is the area of rectangle formula?

A = l × w, where l is the length and w is the width. It is the same formula regardless of which side is called length and which is called width.

Does the area of a rectangle change if you swap length and width?

No. Length times width gives the same answer as width times length, since multiplication does not depend on order. Only the perimeter and diagonal calculations are unaffected by which side is labelled which.

How is rectangle area different from perimeter?

Area measures the enclosed space, in square units, while perimeter measures the total distance around the edge, in linear units. Two rectangles can share the same perimeter yet have very different areas.
