What this calculator does
A wedding anniversary calculator takes a wedding date and works out how many full years a couple has been married, the traditional gift associated with that anniversary year, and how many days remain until the next one comes around. The traditional gift list is a long-standing convention (paper for the first year, silver for the twenty-fifth, gold for the fiftieth) rather than anything that changes, so it is used here as fixed reference data.
The gift names only exist for specific milestone years under the traditional list; most conventions skip straight from the mid-teens to the twentieth year, and then jump in five-year steps after that. For any other year, this calculator shows the nearest milestones either side instead of inventing a name that does not exist in the traditional list.
The formula
Years married is the whole number of full years between the wedding date and today, counting a year as complete only once the month and day have both been reached again. The traditional gift is looked up directly against that year in a fixed reference list; where the exact year has no traditional name, the nearest listed years below and above are shown instead. Days until the next anniversary counts forward from today to the next occurrence of the wedding month and day.

Questions
What is the traditional gift for a 10th, 25th or 50th anniversary?
The 10th anniversary is traditionally tin or aluminium, the 25th is silver, and the 50th is gold. These three, along with paper for the first year, are the most widely recognised of the traditional gift names.
Is there a gift name for every single year?
No. The traditional list names most years from 1 to 15 individually, then moves to five-year steps (20, 25, 30 and onward). Years without a listed name fall between two milestones, which this calculator shows explicitly.
Is the modern gift list the same as the traditional one?
No, a separate modern list exists alongside the traditional one, and the two do not always agree; this calculator uses the traditional list, the older and more widely recognised of the two.
Why might the years-married figure differ from a simple subtraction of the years?
A full year only counts as complete once the wedding month and day have both been passed again in the current year; a wedding date later in the year than today's current month and day has not yet completed that final year.
