What this calculator does
This playback speed calculator shows how long a video, podcast, lecture or audiobook actually takes once it is sped up or slowed down. Enter the original length and the multiplier the player is set to, such as 1.25x, 1.5x or 2x, and it returns the new running time and how much time that saves.
The maths is simple division, but the saving adds up faster than it feels while watching. A 10-hour course at 2x is not "a bit quicker": it is exactly five hours back, and that gap only grows on longer content, which is why the figure is worth checking rather than guessing at.
The formula
New duration = original duration ÷ speed multiplier. Time saved is simply the original duration minus that new duration. Both are shown as hours and minutes so the result reads naturally, alongside the new duration as a percentage of the original.

Multi-hour course content is the case where sped-up playback saves the most absolute time, and checking the new total against a deadline or study schedule is worth doing before committing to it.
Catching up on a podcast backlog
A regular podcast habit at a higher speed can turn an unmanageable backlog into something that fits back within a normal commute or workout, once the new per-episode time is known.
Deciding whether a speed is too fast to follow
Comprehension drops off past a certain speed for most listeners, so weighing the time saved against how much of that speed increase is actually usable is part of choosing a sensible multiplier.

Questions
Does 2x speed really save exactly half the time?
Yes, mathematically: new duration = original ÷ 2, so a 2x speed always halves the running time regardless of how long the original content is.
What speed is considered normal for most people to follow?
There is no fixed rule, since it depends on the content, the speaker's natural pace and individual familiarity with speeding up audio. Many people manage 1.25x to 1.5x comfortably on familiar material, with comprehension dropping off for most somewhere above that.
Does playback speed affect audio pitch?
Most modern video and podcast players apply pitch correction automatically, so voices sound faster but not higher-pitched. Older or more basic players without that feature can shift the pitch noticeably at higher speeds.
Is time saved at higher speed actually useful if comprehension drops?
That depends on the material and the goal. Dense, unfamiliar or technical content generally tolerates less speed increase before comprehension suffers, while familiar or lower-density content, such as a chatty podcast, tolerates more.
