What this calculator does

This eDPI calculator multiplies your mouse DPI by your in-game sensitivity multiplier to give a single number, effective DPI, that describes how far the cursor or crosshair actually moves for a given hand movement. Two players can run completely different DPI and sensitivity settings and still aim at the same real-world speed if their eDPI matches, which is why the figure is used to compare setups across games, mice and players rather than looking at either number alone.

What is eDPI good for, in practice: swapping mice without losing your aim, or copying a pro player's settings correctly. A raw sensitivity value copied between two different DPI settings changes how fast the aim actually moves, but the same eDPI reproduces the same physical feel. This is also how most eDPI converters work between games, by holding eDPI constant and solving for the sensitivity that matches it at whatever DPI the new game or mouse uses.

The formula

Multiply the mouse DPI (dots per inch, how many counts the sensor reports per inch of physical movement) by the in-game sensitivity multiplier the game applies on top of that. The optional third field runs the calculation the other way: given a different DPI you want to move to, it divides the eDPI by that new DPI to return the sensitivity that keeps the same effective speed.

When to use it

Switching mice without losing your aim

A new mouse often ships set to a different default DPI. Working out the eDPI of the old setup first, then solving for the sensitivity that reproduces it at the new DPI, keeps the same physical feel through the swap.

Copying a settings list from another player

Settings lists usually give both DPI and in-game sensitivity together. Converting them to eDPI shows whether two listed setups actually play the same, since the same eDPI can be reached by many different DPI and sensitivity pairs.

Moving the same feel between games

Different game engines scale sensitivity differently, so a raw sensitivity number rarely transfers cleanly. Keeping eDPI constant while changing only the in-game sensitivity value is the more reliable way to carry a feel from one title to another.

eDPI rises in direct proportion to DPI once sensitivity is fixed, since the two are simply multiplied together.

The sensitivity needed at 1,600 DPI is always half the sensitivity at 800 DPI here, because doubling the DPI halves the sensitivity required to keep eDPI unchanged.

What is eDPI?

Is a lower eDPI always better?

No, it is a matter of playstyle rather than a fixed target. Lower eDPI generally means finer, slower aim control that favours precision, while higher eDPI means faster turns at the cost of fine control. Neither is objectively correct.

Does eDPI account for polling rate or mouse acceleration?

No. It only combines DPI and in-game sensitivity. Polling rate (how often the mouse reports position) and any acceleration curve applied by the game or operating system affect feel too, but are separate settings this figure does not capture.
