Tablespoons to Grams Converter calculator

Converts tablespoons to grams or grams to tablespoons, for a chosen ingredient, both directions.

Published 21 August 2026

What this calculator does

Tablespoons to grams and grams to tablespoons are the two directions of the same everyday kitchen problem: a recipe measured by volume needs converting to weight, or a weight on a packet needs converting back to a spoon measure. The answer depends on the ingredient, since a tablespoon is a fixed volume but different ingredients pack into it at different densities.

This calculator converts in both directions for eleven common ingredients, from butter and sugar to honey and flour, using the same US tablespoon (14.79 ml, 1/16 of a US cup) and per-cup density figures used throughout the site's baking conversions.

The formula

FormulaGrams = tablespoons × (grams per US cup ÷ 16) · Tablespoons = grams ÷ (grams per US cup ÷ 16)

Grams per tablespoon is the grams-per-cup figure for that ingredient divided by 16, since there are 16 US tablespoons in a US cup. To go from tablespoons to grams, multiply by that per-tablespoon figure; to go from grams to tablespoons, divide by it.

TermMeaning
TablespoonA US volume measure of 14.79 ml, equal to 1/16 of a US cup.
DensityHow much a given volume of an ingredient weighs; denser ingredients like honey weigh more per tablespoon than lighter ones like flour.
Grams per cupThe reference weight for one US cup of the chosen ingredient, from which the per-tablespoon figure is derived.

The inputs explained

FieldWhat to enter
ValueThe value to convert, either a number of tablespoons or a weight in grams, depending on the direction chosen below.
ConvertChoose whether to convert tablespoons to grams, or grams to tablespoons.
IngredientThe ingredient being measured, which sets the density used in the conversion.

When to use it

Converting a tablespoon quantity in a recipe to grams

A recipe listing "2 tablespoons honey" converts to a specific gram weight for anyone measuring by kitchen scale instead of by spoon.

Converting a packet weight back to a spoon measure

An ingredient sold or labelled by weight, such as a jar marked in grams, converts back to tablespoons when a recipe calls for a spoon measure instead.

Scaling a recipe while keeping proportions accurate

Converting each ingredient between tablespoons and grams keeps a recipe accurate when scaling it up or down, since gram weights scale linearly in a way spoon counts sometimes round awkwardly.

Worked examples

Every figure in the tables below is produced by this page’s own calculator at build time, so the numbers and the tool always agree. Select any row to load that scenario.

2 tablespoons to grams, across common ingredients

Two tablespoons, weighed for a spread of common ingredients.

2 tablespoons of each ingredient
IngredientGramsIn ounces
Flour15.0 g0.53 oz
Sugar25.0 g0.88 oz
Butter28.4 g1.00 oz
Honey42.5 g1.50 oz
Water29.6 g1.04 oz
Cocoa powder10.6 g0.37 oz
2 tablespoons of honey comes to 42.5 g, nearly three times the 15.0 g for the same 2 tablespoons of flour, since honey is far denser than a light, airy powder like flour.

Grams to tablespoons for butter, at common weights

A range of gram weights of butter, each converted to tablespoons.

Butter, grams varied
GramsTablespoonsIn ounces
100.705 tbsp0.35 oz

1007.048 tbsp3.53 oz
20014.097 tbsp7.05 oz
50035.242 tbsp17.64 oz
100 g of butter comes to just over 7 tablespoons; 500 g, close to a standard block or two of butter in many countries, comes to about 35.2 tablespoons.

Questions

How many grams in a tablespoon of honey?

About 21.25 g for a level US tablespoon, based on 340 g per US cup of honey and 16 tablespoons per cup.

How many tablespoons is 100g of butter?

About 7.05 tablespoons, based on 227 g per US cup of butter (14.19 g per tablespoon).

Is a tablespoon the same size everywhere?

No. This calculator uses the US tablespoon, 14.79 ml. An Australian tablespoon is larger, 20 ml, so the same ingredient weighs about a third more per Australian tablespoon.

Why does the same weight in grams give a different number of tablespoons for different ingredients?

Grams measure weight and tablespoons measure volume, and different ingredients have different densities. A dense ingredient like honey needs fewer tablespoons to reach a given weight than a light one like flour.
