What this calculator does

This sqft to sqm calculator converts an area you already know in one unit straight into the other, without needing to re-measure anything. Enter a value in square feet to get square metres, or the reverse, and pick the direction that matches what you have.

This is a different task from working out a room's area from its length and width, which this site's dedicated square metre calculator handles. Here, the area figure is already known, perhaps from a floor plan, a property listing or a supplier's spec sheet in the other unit, and the only thing needed is the conversion itself.

The formula

Formulasqm = sqft × 0.092903; sqft = sqm × 10.7639

Square feet convert to square metres by multiplying by 0.092903, the exact area of one square foot expressed in square metres. Converting the other way divides by that same factor, which is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal, 10.7639.

When to use it

Comparing an overseas property listing

A listing that states floor area in square metres is not directly comparable to a familiar square-footage figure until one is converted into the other.

Reading a supplier spec sheet

Building materials, flooring and insulation are sometimes quoted in the unit a manufacturer defaults to, which does not always match the unit used on a local floor plan or quote.

Checking a converted figure someone else quoted

A quick recalculation confirms whether a stated square metre or square foot figure was converted correctly from the other.

Worked examples

Every figure in the tables below is produced by this page’s own calculator at build time, so the numbers and the tool always agree. Select any row to load that scenario.

Common square foot areas converted to square metres

A range of typical property and room sizes, in square feet, converted to square metres.

Square feet to square metres
Square feetResult
100 ft²9.290 m²
500 ft²46.452 m²
1,000 ft²92.903 m²
2,000 ft²185.806 m²
5,000 ft²464.515 m²
The conversion is strictly proportional, so doubling the square footage doubles the resulting square metreage; 1,000 sq ft is roughly 92.9 m², and 2,000 sq ft is roughly 185.8 m².

Questions

What is the exact conversion factor between square feet and square metres?

1 square foot equals exactly 0.092903 square metres, and 1 square metre equals approximately 10.7639 square feet. Both figures follow directly from the international definition of the foot as exactly 0.3048 metres.

Why do property listings sometimes use square feet and sometimes square metres?

It comes down to local convention: the United States and parts of Canada typically list floor area in square feet, while most other countries, including Australia and the UK for newer listings, use square metres. Cross-border comparisons need a conversion either way.

Is this the same as working out a room's area from its dimensions?

No. This calculator converts an area you already have from one unit to the other. To calculate area from a room's length and width in the first place, use the square metre calculator.

How precise is the conversion?

The 0.092903 factor is exact to six decimal places and is accurate for any practical property, construction or trade use. Rounding only becomes noticeable at very large areas, such as land parcels measured in hectares or acres.

To calculate a room's area from its length and width in the first place, including an L-shaped layout, see the square metre calculator.
