What this calculator does

Gematria is the practice of assigning a numeric value to each letter of a word or phrase, then summing them to get a single figure believed to carry meaning, most familiar from Hebrew and Greek numerology, where letters have always doubled as numbers. This gematria calculator applies the same letter-by-letter idea to any text typed in using the Latin alphabet.

Three systems are offered because "gematria" is not one fixed method: English or Simple gematria assigns A=1 through Z=26 in order, Pythagorean gematria reduces each letter to a single digit 1 through 9 and repeats, and the Hebrew standard system here maps each Latin letter to the value of its rough Hebrew-alphabet equivalent. Switching systems on the same word can give quite different totals.

The formula

Every letter in the input is looked up in a table of values for the chosen system, and the values are added together. The total is also reduced to a single digit by repeatedly summing its own digits, a common secondary figure in numerology practice. Non-letter characters, spaces, numbers and punctuation, are ignored.
