What this calculator does
How many cattle per acre a piece of land can support is not a fixed number: it depends heavily on pasture quality, rainfall, climate, forage type, season and region, so any single "cattle per acre" figure quoted online is really just someone else's local assumption dressed up as a universal rule. This calculator instead asks for your own acres-per-head assumption directly, so the arithmetic is transparent and the figure stays yours to adjust.
Given that stocking-density assumption, it works in either direction: how many head of cattle per acre a given acreage supports, or how many acres are needed to run a herd of a given size. Neither answer is more "correct" than the assumption feeding it, which is exactly why that assumption is left as a free input rather than baked in.
The formula
Cattle supported = acres of pasture ÷ acres assumed per head. Acres needed = herd size × acres assumed per head. Both are the same relationship solved for a different unknown.

How many acres does one cow need?
There is no single answer: it ranges from under 1 acre on high-quality, well-watered improved pasture to 20 acres or more on dry, low-productivity rangeland. Local agricultural extension guidance for the specific region and forage type is the best source for that number, which is why this calculator takes it as an input rather than assuming one.
What is animal units per acre?
An animal unit is a standard reference weight (typically based on a mature cow with a calf) used so that different classes and sizes of livestock can be compared on a common footing. This calculator uses a simpler head-per-acre framing, but the same acres-per-unit logic applies if you convert your herd to animal units first.
Does this account for seasonal changes in pasture growth?
No. It applies a single acres-per-head assumption you supply, which in practice usually reflects a specific season or an average across the year. Many graziers vary stocking density seasonally, adjusting the acres-per-head figure between seasons captures that if needed.
Why does the calculator not just give a standard cattle-per-acre figure?
Because there is no standard figure that holds across regions and pasture types without being misleading. Carrying capacity is specific to a piece of land at a point in time, so the honest approach is to make that figure an explicit, editable input rather than a hidden constant.
