World Happiness Report - 2023

The World Happiness Report 2023, coordinated by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network in collaboration with Gallup and the Wellbeing Research Centre at the University of Oxford, presents a global overview of subjective well-being across 137 countries. This year’s report places particular emphasis on post-pandemic recovery and the enduring influence of social support and institutional trust. Drawing on Gallup World Poll data, the report reaffirms that economic prosperity alone does not guarantee happiness. Instead, social cohesion, generosity, and a sense of freedom continue to emerge as decisive factors influencing national well-being scores.

  1. Rank – Country Rank by Happiness.
  2. Happiness Score (Life Ladder) – A survey-based measure where people rate their life satisfaction on a scale from 0 (worst) to 10 (best).
  3. GDP per Capita (gdp) – The total economic output per person in a country, adjusted for purchasing power.
  4. Healthy Life Expectancy (HLE) – The number of years a newborn is expected to live in good health, based on WHO data.
  5. Social Support – The percentage of people who report having friends or relatives they can rely on in times of trouble.
  6. Freedom to Make Life Choices – The percentage of people who feel satisfied with their freedom to make personal life decisions.
  7. Generosity – A measure of charitable giving, adjusted for national income levels.
  8. Corruption Perception – The average perception of corruption in government and businesses based on survey responses.
  9. Positive Affect – The average of survey responses about positive emotions, including laughter, enjoyment, and interest in daily activities.
  10. Negative Affect – The average of survey responses about negative emotions such as worry, sadness, and anger.
  11. Gini Index (Income Inequality) – A measure of income inequality, with 0 being perfect equality and 1 being maximum inequality.
  12. Institutional Trust – A composite measure of trust in government, judiciary, elections, police, and business integrity.
  13. Coverage and Data Availability – The report includes countries with available data but not necessarily all nations surveyed in the Gallup World Poll.
  14. Missing Data Handling – Missing values for key indicators (e.g., corruption perception, healthy life expectancy) are sometimes estimated using related data sources.
  15. Regional Groupings – Countries are grouped into regions such as Western Europe, Latin America, and Sub-Saharan Africa for analysis.
  16. Regression Analysis – Statistical models used to explain variations in happiness scores based on six key factors (GDP, life expectancy, social support, freedom, generosity, and corruption perception).
  17. Imputed Values – Some missing data points are estimated using related datasets but are not used in official country rankings.

Insights
Use Cases

Finland ranks first for the sixth consecutive year, with a score of 7.8, sustaining its position as a benchmark for well-being. Nordic countries once again dominate the upper tier of the rankings, attributed to strong welfare systems, trust in public institutions, and balanced work–life structures. Meanwhile, countries facing persistent instability, conflict, or economic hardship populate the lower end of the index.

The report notes that the average global happiness score remained relatively stable, despite macroeconomic uncertainties and geopolitical tensions. One key finding of the 2023 edition is the resilience of happiness levels in countries with robust community support systems. The data indicates that individuals living in socially connected environments experienced less psychological distress during global crises compared to those in more fragmented societies.
